This is an opportunity to be part of a team that is responsible for implementing Department of State Agency-wide web based messaging applications.  The candidate will create and edit technical documentation throughout the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) for projects that use either agile or waterfall methodologies.  

 

As a Technical Writer, you will have the opportunity to work closely with software developers, test engineers, support staff, and others to create and maintain user and administrator documentation for software applications. You should have experience with writing technical documentation for a variety of audiences, including requirements, use cases, design documentation, installation guides, administrator and end user documentation (including online help), release notes, etc. Meeting facilitation skills, the ability to quickly learn new software and features, and knowledge of industry best practices are a must.

Responsibilities

What the role involves (Responsibilities)

  • Documentation Development
    • Research and become familiar with complex software applications through hands-on use and by interacting closely with software developers, testers, customers, and other stakeholders.
    • Write enterprise-level (not just front end) functional and non-functional requirements and use cases.
    • Interview subject matter experts, become familiar with the system, facilitate meetings, and perform other types of information gathering to clearly, concisely, and accurately describe functionality and instructions in writing.
    • Work in a development environment to use applications and familiarize yourself with the project to ensure accuracy of document content.
    • Prepare written content and diagrams to articulate complex COTS and GOTS information systems in clear and concise language without a loss of detailed meaning for varying audience types.
    • Work independently to draft, edit, and proofread build guides, installation guides, release notes, online help, and other technical documents to organize the complete production of formal user and administrator reference materials.
  • Standards Development
    • Implement current industry technical documentation best practices and Department of State policies with every project.
    • Evaluate current style guides for accurate up-to-date industry standards.
  • Project Management
    • Manage time and expectations in the execution of documentation development efforts to ensure on-time delivery.
    • Submit effective, concise communication regarding issues, objectives, and initiatives.

 

Qualifications

What you’ve got (Qualifications & Skills)

  • Outstanding communication, writing, editing, proofreading, and grammar skills
  • Familiarity with agile and waterfall software development processes
  • Expert in Microsoft Word
  • Preferred: Familiarity with RoboHelp, FrameMaker, Snagit, and Visio
  • Preferred: Familiarity with Department of State terminology and style guides
  • Preferred: Familiarity with 508 compliance standards
  • Bachelor’s degree
